HADLEY

It feels like it’s an eternity that we spend together, wrapped up in each other. We lose track of time as we’re caught in the moment, completely consumed with each other. I’m a mess, we’re both drowning, but neither of us bother to come up for air. Ander replaces my need for oxygen and I let him fill my body and soul with life.

The tempo of the music that pounds through the speakers changes and the crowd around us slowly disperses. Ander lightly breaks away, with a ghost of a smile on his lips as he brushes a stray hair away from my face.

“Come with me,” he says, grabbing my hand.

I let him lead me through the crowded room, watching as he grabs a water bottle from the counter as he pulls me along with him outside. The dry heat outside settles on my sticky skin and a cool breeze dances across my skin. We slip past a few stray groups of people out on the back patio and Ander lets go of my hand as he drops onto the concrete at the edge of the pool.

My mind wanders back to the last time and I feel the heat of embarrassment creeping up my neck and spreading across my already flushed face. Glancing down at him, I meet his blue eyes, void of any judgment, and smile as he pats the ground beside him. Crouching down, I ease onto my ass and drop my feet into the pool beside his as they lightly tread the water.

A peaceful, comfortable silence falls over us as we sit in the cool night, as if it’s only us out here. The moon casts its light across the pool and my eyes follow it up into the sky, where it’s nestled in a sea of stars.

When the sun runs from the darkness of the night like a coward, the moon never fails to shine through it all, even in the darkest of skies.

I catch Ander staring at me from the corner of my eye and I bite back a smile as an unfinished conversation floats into my mind and rings in my head.

“Ander.” I pause, glancing over at him as my feet dangle in the cool water. “Can you tell me the truth?”

He stares at me for a moment, raising an eyebrow at me. “I can try.”

“What you said earlier, how anything that I need, I get it from you and no one else. I thought that you work at the casino?”

“I do,” he says hesitantly.

“Do you deal drugs too?” I ask him, cutting straight to the point.

Ander closes his eyes briefly and drops his head as he runs a defeated hand over his short dark hair. His facade slips for only a moment before he looks back at me with his poker face perfectly in place. “I make sure that my friends are taken care of.”

I chew on his words and let them sink in as I cut my eyes at him. “Just your friends?”

“Friends, friends of friends.
